So we had a good turn out at Scrabble Club starting off 2011 on a good note (or on a good word, for the sake of Scrabble). It was good to see some regulars and as we were playing we noticed we have not seen our Octogenarian club member in quite some time. So I decided to call her, midway through a game. We miss her and I was hoping we could convince her to come back. She was offended, but wouldn't give details. I am not sure if the words offended her, the loses, or the people. So we need to be more sensitive at the club... Having said that i do have to say i accomplished my 2010 New Years' resolution and was able to play the entire year without an offensive word like @$!^&^ or @%@!**! or even !#@$!^*&*(*!. So I am proud of myself.

JAN FEIDEL- 2009 Delmarva Scrabble Champion!

Congratulations to Jan Feidel. He won the 2009 Delmarva Scrabble Championship by going undefeated in pool play and then defeated Sue Vok in the playoffs by scoring over 500 points to set up a duel against Faye Wilson for the Championship.

"There's nothing like having an entire day to do something that you totally enjoy doing," said Faye Wilson as she conceded defeat at the 2nd Annual Delmarva Scrabble Tournament. The 2008 Delmarva Champion defended her title rigorously, winning 5 of her 6 round robin games. However, in the end, she graciously surrendered her title to Mr. Jan Feidel, a Scrabbler from the Rehobeth Beach area who has played in national tournaments.

Faye describes Jan as quite a formidable player. "In my first game, we both had bingoes but he still led me by 30+ points. In the championship game, it was no contest halfway thru the game. Jan had a bingo (used all 7 of his tiles and got 50 extra points) and I never got one. It was quite a challenge but a good one!"

The tournament was organized by the wonderful and wondrous Trent Swanson, fearless leader of the Salisbury Scrabble Club, and graciously hosted by Barnes & Noble (where the club meets every 1st and 3rd Monday night). The tournament piqued the interest of four players from the Delaware beach area as well as some local players. Salisbury Scrabbler Martha (an octogerian)won three of the four games that she played.

Kudos to Barnes & Noble staff especially community relations manager Hannah Miller who provided some wonderful prizes for the tournament. Donna, from the Lewes Beach Scrabble Club, won a prize for having the highest point word 'quirkiest' for 118 points. A prize was also given to the person who had the highest points but still lost the game to Theresa won scored over 350 points in defeat. There were two games during the day in which the winners scored over 500 points. Salisbury Scrabbler Faye Wilson won a prize (for the 2nd year in a row) for having the highest point word that used the letters 'b & n.' Her word 'bovines' netted 86 points.

On April 25th 2009 we will have our annual Scrabble Tournament at Barnes and Nobles in Salisbury. The event will be held from 10am-4pm, with the Championship game beginning at 4pm. All those wanting to play will need to contact me either through email, phone, or through the blog www.delmarvascrabble.blogspot.com . There is a limit of 30 players so sign up fast. There is a $10 entrance fee, to be paid the day of the event. There will be prizes for first place, second place, the highest losing score, the highest word with B and N (Barnes and Nobles) and the most points scored by a player under the age of 18. So everyone come out and play! The tournament will be using the 4th edition of the Scrabble Dictionary as its official word source (so no bad words!)..:)

It has been a while...

I have not posted in a while but the club is still going strong. We normally have around 10-12 people showing up each 1st and 3rd Monday of the month. It has been great to see new folks come out and learn the game. It is getting difficult to wean people off of the cheat sheets and dictionaries, but we are working on that. I took a few pictures last club meeting but never asked people if I could post them so I should probably wait. So instead I am posting a picture of a board from one of the tournaments I played in. Interesting how the custom boards and tiles look. I need to get some of those!

I am starting to really feel that our club is established and ready to start putting on some tournaments...:)

Summer Scrabble

So last Monday we met and had a nice little group, around 10 people there. There were four games going and two newcomers at the club. I big welcome to Candance (I hope I spelled that right) and Sara. We hope to see you all again. I will try to ensure next meeting that we have table reserved. It is getting more difficult during the summer and as our little group grows. If anyone is up for a game let me know....

Record Attendance at Scrabble Club

So last night we had 14 people show up to play Scrabble! That is awesome! So let's bring it up to 20! We had at one point 5 different games going on. It was nice to see a few new faces out at the club such as Kate and Jordan. We also had someone from Delmarva Youth there taking pictures of the young players throwing down words.

I am thinking with the large numbers we may have to go to playing one on one. That way, when two table finish, they can switch and keep playing. We had a few people who had to hang out and wait while other games were finishing.

Good to see you all out at the Club.

SALISBURY -- Faye Wilson's opportunities were quickly deteriorating, but she wasn't completely finished.

"This is my last one," said the Salisbury resident, spelling out "I-R-I-S" on the Scrabble board.

Annette Berry, Wilson's first opponent, nodded in approval.

"Very nice," she said, before gesturing to her own line of random vowels and consonants. "Look at what I got stuck with."

Their match was part one of a slate of opening games during Saturday's Scrabble Tournament at Salisbury's Barnes & Noble book store. The word game pits two to four players who score points by forming words from individual lettered tiles on a board with a 15-by-15 grid. Words are formed across and down in crossword fashion and must appear in a standard dictionary.

The event, in part, was meant to showcase Salisbury's Delmarva Scrabble Club, one of many that dot the Lower Shore.

Club president Trent Swanson said the group was formed about a year ago and they have slowly added to their ranks.

"I just put up flyers in Barnes & Noble," he said. "People came that way, through word of mouth and from people just watching us, coming up and saying 'What's that?"

Swanson, who lives in Salisbury, said he first started playing the game growing up ("My dad would always beat us. Now he won't even play me.") but not seriously until about five years ago.

"I was working with at-risk kids in Cambridge," he said. "They had a Scrabble board and the kids were using a lot of slang, so I went and bought Scrabble dictionary -- It was good to teach them proper words to use in their games."

From there, the Swanson landed at Barnes & Noble.

"It just started as a casual thing. We always like to have groups here and they bring a different energy," said Hannah Miller, the store's community relations manager. "I think there's always been Scrabble players here, but they've just never gotten together like this."

The club now meets there the first and third Monday of every month.

And the partnership has been good for both sides, Swanson said.

"Barnes & Noble has been very nice to us, letting use their tables," he said. "And I'm sure they've sold us a few Scrabble dictionaries."

Early in the tournament, Swanson squared off against Chuck Porter, a Salisbury resident recruited into the club in August. While Porter considered his next word, Swanson got in some trash talk.

"He's only cheated three times," he said, smiling at Porter.

Mock accusations aside, the contest between two was never in doubt.

"He destroyed me," Porter said with a laugh.

Wilson said Swanson's win was a little more impressive given the relatively short-time he has been playing competitively.

"I would have never thought," said Wilson, a life-long player herself.

Still, Miller knows there are some other major Scrabble devotees in this area

"There are some serious, hard-core players out there," she said.

Image from WikipediaA huge thanks to all who made it out to the Scrabble Tournament today. We had a small crowd but some great games. We had six players and each player played every other player, so a total of five games were played by each person. After the five games the two players with the best record and/or best point cumulative played for the championship. Three players ended the day with a 4-1 record and so it came down to points to see who played for the title of Delmarva Scrabble Champion. Faye and I (Trent) ended up playing the final game. It was great final game and with the Score 347-344, Faye played one last play for 11 points and won by 22 (362-340) after deducting the points on my rack. It was a well fought game and tournament. A few of the prizes given out went to the following people:
-Best under 18 player (and only under 18 player): KARA
-Biggest Loser (highest losing score): Chuck with 317 points
-Highest scoring B and N word: Faye with "Beanies" for 63 points
-Highest Scoring word: Trent with "Jasmine" for 110 points
Good to see two new faces Annette and Alicia out playing with us for the first time. Annette drove all the way from Ocean Pines to play with us. Alicia came out swinging with a 4-1 record and was mere points away from playing for the championship.
A huge THANKS to Hannah at Barnes and Noble for helping us put together a successful tournament!!!!

Next year we hope to have more players and a bigger tournament!!!! So pull out those three and four letter words and start studying!!

Scrabble Tournament Coming up!

I am a little concerned with the low number of people who have signed up at this time. So get Busy. Information in on this site as well as a registration form. I am going and look forward to seeing all of you there. We will be using the Scrabble Dictionary 4th Edition. So be there everyone! Be sure to bring your boards, tiles and dictionaries if you have one! If you have any questions feel few to call or email me. We will be playing with the National Scrabble Association's Rules.
In other news Scrabulous is under fire for copyright reasons. We will see if the online game sticks around. I enjoy playing it on Facebook and online but it is stealing money away from Hasbro and that could make it difficult to stay afloat due to Legal Reasons. A special Monday Night Scrabble Night is being planned for this Monday to prepare for the Tournament so come to that as well at 7pm.

Tuesday Morning Wrap-Up of Monday Night Fun

Last night was the premier of February Scrabble Club meetings, and we had a great turnout (I think there were 10-12 coming and going throughout the evening). We also welcomed newcomers Merri and Chuck! That's Merri's Chuck, not to be confused with me, Kelly's Chuck.

There were a number of really intense games that ended within ten points or so and some great bingos! Word is that Janice had two in one game.

I didn't catch all of the great plays, but if you remember them, please post them and relive the moment while gloating here on the blog.

Also, don't forget our next meeting is just 13 days away on February 18 at the B&N cafe, Salisbury!

Last Monday's Wrap-Up

Hello! It's your ol' pal, Chuck, with the Monday Night Wrap-Up.

First some blog-related housekeeping notes.

I have posted a collage featuring, from top left to right and bottom left to right: game 1, table one; game one, table two; table two's score sheet; and game two, table one.To zoom in on the picture, just click it once. If that's not good enough for you, I can start posting the full high resolution versions, but I thought I'd start here and see how it goes. I think you can make out the letters/check on all the bluffs that we play if you check out the enlarged version.

At any given time we had about eight people Monday, with some Scrabblers leaving early and some arriving late. This made for a smooth two tables of four.

GAME 1:

Table 1:
At the lightweights' table were Barbara, Jason (was this his first time too?), newcomer Kelly, and I. Everyone played well, and there were some interesting "words" thrown down--all in the name of "I ain't gonna challenge it. Play it!" fun. For more on "words" and bluffing, see Trent's note about using the dictionaries and using the challenge to your advantage! I came out on top for the first time since I joined in the Monday-Scrabble-Fun-Fest.

Table 2:
At the table for the heavy hitters, Kara, Trent, Faye, and Elizabeth (I think that's a Z in Trent's writing) battled it out. Kara made an exceptional bingo with, if I recall correctly, HITTERS. Still, that Bingo was not quite enough to keep Faye from coming away with a clear victory.

GAME 2:

I can only report on the action at the lightweights' table, for that was my last game of the evening. We traded Jason for John as Jason had important fatherly duties, like bookshopping, to take care of. (Side note: John now knows the start time for the meetings (7:00 p.m.), so we look to see him in game one next week.) In game 2, there were a few less bluffs played, but in the end, there can only be one victor, and that one was John--by a margin of almost seventy points.

Hey everyone!!! Thanks to all that showed up last minute this past Monday. Sorry Chuck for not letting you know but for some reason I did not save your email address so email it to me or post it here. We had a number of great games with some nice words played throughout the night. John played a nice bingo his first game with "Annoyed" which he addeed Detox to later in the game. Annoyed is nice because it is not easy to make a 7 letter word using a Y, so good job. Elizabeth played Axiom during the same game on the triple word space which was impressive. I played a rare Triple Triple (a bingo covering two triple word spaces) with the word Creatines for 149 points, which was nice. However what was sad for me was playing a phoney three letter word on accident with the word FAW, ouch. I am sure there were a bunch of other interesting plays that I missed. Please share them. It was great to see Carla out again and fun to share stories of online games with Janice (who just bingoed with Sooners on me on our online game)

Our prayers go out to Faye and the family and friends of her friend who passed away. I hope you are well Faye.

We had a good little turnout tonight at the Scrabble Club. Janice, Faye, Chuck, John and myself were there. Chuck asked me to put up a link oh where to find the Word Lists in order to learn a few more acceptable Scrabble words.

It was great to see everyone out last night. I have not commented on here for a while and thought I would make an update. I had a person ask whether there are any age limits to the club... not at all.. We had a middle schooler play with the best of us last night. I was also asked if we ever play other nights besides Monday nights. At this time we are meeting just every First and Third Monday, however we may in the future hold tournaments and get togethers on different days. We are thinking of putting together a special Holiday Tournament and possibily using as an opportunity to raise money for a charity organization on the shore (to be determined at a later time). Let me know what you all think.
We had a great turnout last night with eight people showing off their skills. We are going to be meeting Next Monday in place of the first Monday of September (Labor Day conflicts)...:) So get busy learning all those 2 and 3 letter words and I'll see you all next Monday... and no crazy words like LWEI, CWM and OYEZ!!!!:)

A Scrabble Shootout in Salisbury

This week Carla and Janice came out fighting the first game at the Salisbury Scrabble club. Either one of them could of won the game which Carla ended up stealing with the last play "ION". Carla also had a nice Bingo which Janice and I were both tempted to try and challenge off the board. The word was "Recaller" and it was good, so thank goodness niether of us tried to challenge it. I was able to throw down "Noisier" in the second game and barely won at the end. The third game Denise joined us for a four person game. It went fast and everyone was playing some nice words. We are hoping for some more players in two weeks. We are also wanting to put the club's information in the local newspaper. Anyone on Delmarva wanting to play Scrabble come on out and join us. Catherine and Faye who were there last time were missed this week.

I have set this blog up to be a meeting place for all Scrabble players on Delmarva. Some of you I have met at barnes and Nobles and others I hope to meet soon. Last Monday we had a good turn out with 5 players and played a total of 5 games. I played against Faye and we had two great games. In the second game Faye played a great bingo, BRAINED, to seal the victory. I would love to hear of some great plays from the other games which I was not a part of. One interesting word which I was tempted to play in the first game was ZERK. I was hestitate to play it not knowing whether or not it was in fact a word. I played ZERO instead and later realized ZERK is in fact a word. Darn it. :) On the 4th of June I am going to bring some forms to keep track of Bingos, scores and cool plays each game. I'll keep you all updated.
